Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Taxicab company Yellow Checker Star donated $5,000 to the Semper Fi Fund on Tuesday.

The donation contributes to financial assistance and additional services the nonprofit provides for military service men and women, veterans and their families, not just in Nevada but across the U.S.

The donation comes with a personal connection between Yellow Checker Star and the U.S. military. Company field operations manager and grandson of company co-founder Joel Willden has maintained a lifelong friendship with Nevada native Sgt. Thomas “Trey” Humphrey.

While serving in Afghanistan as a Marine, Humphrey lost a leg three years ago.

Yellow Checker Star honored Humphrey’s service by donating a renovated van to him once he returned home from overseas.

The Semper Fi Fund has donated more than $90 million to more than 11,500 military service members since the service was founded 10 years ago.
